Your first fishing set

You don't need to know all the names of fishing gear to get started. Begin by choosing where you want to fish. That makes the rest of the choices much easier.

1. Choose the fishing spot

A lake, a pay-lake, the coast, and a boat trip all have different requirements. Choose a kit that is described for your type of fishing, rather than just choosing the longest rod.

2. See what the kit contains

A fishing kit can include both a rod and a reel. Line may be included, but that is not always the case. Therefore, read the product contents. Bait, hooks, pliers, and a net might need to be purchased separately.

3. Understand the casting weight

The rod's casting weight is typically indicated in grams. A rod with a casting weight of 10–30 g is intended for bait within this range. It is the weight of the bait, not the weight of the fish.

4. Buy for the first trip

Start with a suitable kit, line, a few appropriate lures, and a pair of pliers. You can expand your tackle box once you know what you enjoy fishing for.
